Yep. It's me. I babysat my brother's kids tonight and having four kids under 4 in a small apartment is, let's just say, an adventure. My nephew Josh hadn't been here 45 minutes when he told me he wanted to go home. Maybe it would help if I had a yard . . . oh, and patience helps too.
Aunt Sarah is fun and crafty with a touch of "hippy-chic" that kids love.
Aunt Vicki is an elementary school teacher and just knows how to do fun things with the little cutie-pies.
Aunt Julie is also an elementary school teacher and kids FLOCK to her. I'm serious, kids run to Julie like the Pied Piper.
Aunt Jennie has the patience of Mother Teresa and a sweet little voice that is very non-threatening.
Aunt Katie is just plain F. U. N. with just enough sarcasm to make the kids laugh and then go, "Wait. What?"
I am the Irma Bombeck to the Martha Stewarts out there. I am the "should be medicated aunt but take B12 just to be safe" aunt. I'm the type A "pick up these toys, before you play with those toys" aunt. I'm the "when you're a teenager I'll know what to do with you" aunt.
I'm going to blame my thyroid. Symptoms include: depression, anxiety, MEMORY LOSS, etc. I still don't have my brain MRI results back so I can't blame it on a tumor . . . yet. (Don't be alarmed - we're just checking out my pituitary gland!)
Maybe I should blame the small living space - that could make one cranky right? Not being able to send them out to play because we have no yard and playing in the street is just WAY too irresponsible!
Ah well, I love 'em even if I'm at a loss what to do with them! They say love goes a long way . . .

I'm sure they love you too! I'm sorry you are having to go through thyroid problems.
thyroids suck!! I am so not the fun aunt either....I missed the memo about if your going to be a Kanenewisher aunt you have to be ridiculously talented and fun. If there were no unfun people in the world then noone would be fun either....right...isn't that how the whole opposition in all things works???? we are serving our part in the whole grand plan :) Hang in there!
i find that hard to believe, kristi! you are super fun! i wish i had the humor and the energy that you have!
your nephew was just having a bad day!
keep us posted on the thyroid and mri. bummer!
I totally understand where you are coming from...I'm that aunt too...'take of your shoes, put that back before you get something else out etc...'! Oh well! Charley is getting so beautiful! I can't believe how big she is getting! Your pictures of the Rose parade made me miss Pasadena! Miss you guys!
PASHAW! They just flock to me because I smell like chocolate chip cookies, once they realize I'm not entirely edible, the gig is up. I blame your thyroid too and mine and Jennie's and Kevins. Oh, wait...lets just blame Hamilton water! In the meantime, I'm hearing from the teachers at school that alcohol and gambling soothes all anxiety. Just sayin'...that's the word on the street (or at least among the 4th grade teachers I work with:) A little "FYI" if you will.
Too some I am the bad aunt too. I am much better with infants than with 3-11 year olds. With babies I am a whiz...I hold them, make them smile, put them to sleep, feed them and change diapers...nothing too it. But the older ones (3-9) I am always harping on them to eat in the kitchen, be nice, don't fight, stop whining, share, stop wrestling, stop laughing, stop talking, stop hitting each other, put their pj's on, brush their teeth, pick up your toys, clean the house, mop the floor, vacuum, go to bed, do your homework, don't talk back, I can still hear you,...you know the drill (I sound like a mom). I haven't had to entertain the over 11 year olds yet because that era begins this year. I do know that when it comes to teaching I love teaching teen-agers...so I look forward to the older ones...knock on wood.
But you are dead-on with that observation of needing a yard...when I watch my nieces and nephews it is best to let them play outside the whole time far away from me or to have them absorbed in a good book or watching a movie.
Not true my friend. You are the aunt that mommy & daddy trust with their wee ones and that they can feel completley assured that they can relax and have a great time and that their kids are completley taken care of. That alone is enough. 'Sides they may have been hellians but they sure talk a lot about the fun they had and when we are going to let them go back!
